Sofas for Service Donates Furniture to Milwaukee County Veteran

A Milwaukee County veteran now feels more comfortable after a nonprofit group helped furnish his home on Saturday.

From unloading to lifting, the freezing cold of January was no match for a group of men on mission with Sofas for Service.

“We provide veterans’ homes free of charge. Basically no questions are asked other than proof of service,” said Pete Hestekin.

The group donates new and lightly used furniture to veterans who need help.

“We want to raise them. We want to give them decent stuff,” Hestekin said. “Everything for the house.”

Hestekin drove a trailer from Eau Claire to make this special delivery. Sofas for Service helped 128 veterans homes in 2021, he said. On Saturday the focus was on veteran Lee Zemke.

“This place has been a miracle, saving the station for me and countless other veterans,” Zemke said. “I’m coming from a low low. I’m in recovery. I’m in a recovery program and I’m working hard.”

From sofas to tables and more, donations have filled the veteran’s home and heart.

“What I hope people take a way out of is trusting God. Pray to Him with all your heart,” Zemke said.

“It’s a simple thing. Help each other,” Hestekin said. “(It’s) hard work, but it’s a very simple thing.”

On February 5th, there will be an indoor cornhole tournament at Uihlein Soccer Park on Good Hope Road to help raise funds for Sofas for Service. Further information is available on the Sofas for Service website.
