Canterbury-based furniture retailer Lenleys has announced a pre-refurbishment closing sale at its Clarke store in Maidstone.
The Maidstone store will close temporarily at the end of March to undergo a major refurbishment program and is due to reopen in early summer as Lenleys Home (Maidstone).
The Maidstone, Clarkes store has been in business for over 90 years and has been part of the Lenleys business since 2007. Since acquiring the store, Lenleys has introduced new products and ranges which have proven popular with local shoppers as well than those who travel. from further away.
Maidstone’s refurbishment follows changes to Lenleys flagship showroom in Canterbury, which added several new ranges to the workshop last year, including dedicated departments for Ercol, Orla Kiely, Alexander & James, David Gundry upholstery, Richmond dining room and a large new flooring design showroom.
The changes make Lenleys one of the only stores in Kent to carry key designer ranges.
Lenley is a family business, and its original founders, Leonard Watts and Stanley Adsett, were both from Maidstone – the family had long wanted to have a store in the area. Lenleys in Canterbury opened in 1936, with the pair tossing a coin to decide which mix of their names – Lenleys or Stannards – would give the store its name.
Lenleys partner Lavinia Watts, who is the third generation of the Watts family to manage the store’s identity, says: “We have always believed that our business was founded in Maidstone. Although the first store may not have been opened there, it is certainly where my grandfather and his associate had the idea to establish Lenleys. We were therefore delighted to be able to welcome the Maidstone Clarkes store into the Lenleys family in 2007.
“We now believe it is time to invest in a major refurbishment of the Maidstone store and it seemed only natural to fully welcome it by naming it after our family business. The store will reopen in early summer as Lenleys Home, and we are really looking forward to welcoming customers to our opening event this summer.
During the temporary store closure, all existing orders will be fulfilled as normal.
