Ahead of the All Progressive Congress (APC) national convention, key party players in Bauchi state shouted at what they called “outright exclusion from the power-sharing deal within the left”.

All of the critical actors unanimously rejected the decision of some of the party actors in the North East geopolitical area to micro-zone the headquarters of the party’s national vice president in Borno State.

APC leaders who rose from an emergency meeting held in Abuja, said they were not part of the decision to hand over the National Vice President seat to Borno State.

According to stakeholders including former state governors, former state deputy governors, three sitting senators, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives and eight of his Green House colleagues and 17 members of the House of Assembly.

Aggrieved APC stalwarts have said it is impossible for Borno State to be placed far ahead of Bauchi State, reputedly the APC’s traditional base in the northeast of the country in the general elections from 2015 and 2019.

Party leaders argued that Borno State had more than enough government patronage under the administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari than Bauchi State which had carved out a niche for itself as a traditional base of the APC after Kano State since the 2015 general elections.

The Bauchi chiefs cited National Security Advisor General Ali Mohammed Mongonu, Group Chief Executive of the Nigerian National Petrole Corporation (GMD) Mele Kyari, Inspector General of Police Usman Baba Alkali and Chief Executive of the Northeast Development Commission, Mohammed Goni. Alkali Borno and Yobe States have also produced the national secretary and later acting president of the APC for the past two years, among others, to back up their claims.

They thus urged the APC leadership to rethink and treat Bauchi State fairly and equitably.

“There is a need to strengthen the position of APC in Bauchi State to enable the party to reclaim the state.

“Bauchi State has the most votes in the North East after Kano State and has always delivered the highest votes to the APC after Kano State, and they insist that don’t play with it.”
