At High Point Market | Two Italian furniture makers bring the leather movement to market

Offering a new People collection, the joint venture is able to offer a lot to larger retail customers.

AT HIGH POINT MARKET —Two Italian upholstery manufacturers, Nicoletti Home and Calia Italia, are offering a new leather movement group at High Point Market called the People Collection. The two companies formed a joint venture in 2008, Nicoletti Calia, to conquer the North American market, by purchasing raw materials together, sharing administrative costs and using a combined service and sales force. The People collection is their latest line of moving upholstery.

In the rest of the global market, the two companies enjoy healthy competition. According to Eustachio Nicoletti, director of the combined company, they are now the second largest manufacturer in the “sofa district” of Murgia, Italy. Nicoletti Calia is the exclusive distributor of Nicoletti Home and Calia Italia in the United States and Canada.

The People collection features motorized motion groups crafted from 100% Italian-made leather, with an emphasis on comfort and value. Designs span transitional and contemporary and are available in a variety of colors.

At High Point Market, an additional 3,000 square feet is now dedicated to the People collection at Casa Italia.

“This market for the first time, the company presents the People collection, a more traditional look with a very aggressive price, all made in Italy,” said Nicoletti. “The collection was created in Europe two years ago with limited SKUs and leathers. Our other collections have many leathers, fabrics and colors which allow us to work with many independent stores in the United States.

“However, now with the People collection, we have a type of leather with a more limited palette, so we are able to achieve an economy of scale in order to sell to all major customers,” he added.

The company offers flexibility in terms of containers. “We don’t want the customer to have to buy a full container of one style. We want them to try this; shipping costs from Italy are down. This allows us to be aggressive in terms of pricing,” noted Nicoletti.

He said his customers wanted products made in Italy. For Nicoletti Calia, the company can ship out of Italy in four weeks.

“This is by far the most competitive offer we have for dealers. This is what sets us apart: we keep our Italian DNA. Dealers know we may not be the cheapest, but we find value in our offerings,” added Nicoletti.

The company said that its success lies in the fact that it can offer many options, from high-end to mainstream, from movement to fabric and leather. “It’s a great one-stop-shop for our customers in North America,” noted Nicoletti.
