Area resort donates 28 furniture trucks to Habitat for Humanity

‘We don’t buy product, so donations are vital,’ says Habitat official who is grateful for ‘significant’ donation of more than 8,600 items

MUSKOKA LAKES – JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka began a complete renovation of the entire property, including the lobby, public areas and guest rooms, during its 10th anniversary celebration in 2018.

Cottage-style rattan and solid oak furniture with green and gold accent upholstery has been replaced with a modern look of dark blue and gray. Resort management reached out to Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North (OGN), offering all of this furniture and decor for sale at ReStores in their territory – including the one in Orillia on James Street.

“At $60,000, the value of this donation is significant,” says Kimberley Woodcock, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North. “We collected 28 truckloads, representing over 8,600 items – from furniture and lighting to decor and art. This has allowed us to share this merchandise among our subsidiary’s five ReStores, meaning the proceeds from sales will benefit construction projects in Muskoka and beyond.

“Our ReStores are social enterprise retailers,” continues Woodcock. “We don’t buy product, so donations are essential. They fund Habitat’s vision of a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. This year, we have active construction projects that will serve eight families in Muskoka and North Simcoe, with more planned for 2023. This is having a big impact on communities where affordable housing inventory is almost non-existent.

Habitat for Humanity ReStores welcome donations of new and used furniture, appliances, decor, home improvement, and building materials from corporate and personal donors. They also accept e-waste, scrap metal and non-working devices, diverting tons of waste from landfills every year.

Profits from ReStore sales support, promote and financially enable Habitat for Humanity’s mission. Every donation serves the community and creates possibility in a way no other retailer can, through their connection to Habitat for Humanity.

Didier Dolivet, General Manager of JW Marriott The Rosseau Resort, said, “We are thrilled to partner with Habitat for Humanity for this worthy cause. All donated items are in excellent condition, as they are only 10 years old. They have been used with care and frequently cleaned. We hope they bring joy to many homes and families in Muskoka. 2022 is a year of hope and new beginnings for many. It’s a small gesture of kindness that we want to share with our community.
